Re: Site Blacklisted in Google because of Malware

Ok, so you have cleaned up the malware on your website but find that your site is still blacklisted by Google and you are too impatient to wait for Google to automatically re-scan your website. Then it’s time for you to request a review directly to Google.

This is required if you want to quickly remove your site from Google’s blacklist. Once you submit the request, it’ll take just a few hours to complete the review and remove the warning if your site is clean. Without the request, it may take

The request does two important things:several days before your site’s status is cleared.

1) It tells Google that the owner of the site is aware of the problem and has already taken action to remove malicious content. This shifts the odds in your favour when they make decisions after ambiguous results of scans.

2) It puts the site on a priority list (it should be scanned within 24 hours)

Don’t be afraid to request the review even if you are not sure that your site is completely clean. If any security issues are detected during the review, they will be reported in your Webmaster Tools account. Then you can fix them and request another review.

Blacklisted sites are not removed from search results (they are just labeled as potentially harmful), so you only need to remove the warning.

You can request a review of your site using Google Webmaster Tools:

http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

More information about the review process is available in Google’s Webmaster Help Center.

Re: Blank page or 500 Internal Server error

The problems are caused by your code failing. A blank page is usually a PHP error so checking your PHP error_log within your Plesk panel will provide causes as to what the problem is. Usually the best course of action is to re-upload your website or restore from a recent backup.

A 500 internal server error is usually related to a scripting issue using CGI or Perl scripts. Again, this means the script is unable to execute and this generic error which does not give much away means you need to check your scripts or simply upload / restore to your last working copy.

Both of these errors means a quick call to your web designer or just restore from your latest backup in the Backup manager (You do take backups right?!)

As of June 1st, 2012, UK Cheapest no longer be providing support for Ensim powered servers. If you are currently using Ensim, we highly recommend you migrate to Parallels Plesk.

Ensim End Of Life

The last version of Ensim was released on 4/16/2009. Since then there have been a few hot patches but no significant upgrades. Ensim 4 has not been updated since 2007. If you are still using these versions of Ensim, you likely are using an outdated OS. We recommend Red Hat Enterprise 5 and will soon be moving to Red Hat Enterprise 6 once software vendors release their updates for the new RHEL version.

Ensim Mandatory Migrations

We have been offering free upgrades to Plesk since December 2010  but now it’s time to make the final push.

Starting 1st June, any accounts remaining on Ensim will be automatically migrated to Parallels Plesk 10.x. This covers all remaining accounts on Microlite18 to 24 Ensim servers. This process will be complete by June 28th.

All Ensim accounts will remain accessable using your old login details until June 30th when they will be deleted.

If your domain name is not hosted with UK Cheapest, please change your domain name servers to:

  • ns.microlite11.com
  • ns2.microlite11.com

Your new Control Panel URL (still using your old login and password) will be:

Your username and password will remain unchanged.

The old Ensim control panels will still be available until June 30th using the links below:

Additional Differences

FTP – Use ftp.yourdomain.com instead of server.microliteXX.com as your FTP hostname. Your FTP username is now in the format “adminXXXXX” and not “adminXXXXX@yourdomain.com”.

Email – Your email passwords and usernames will remain unchanged.

Webmail – Your default webmail (Horde) can be accessed through http://webmail.yourdomain.com. You will no longer find webmail at www.yourdomain.com/webmail.

Squirrelmail – This application is no longer automatically installed. You can install squirrelmail using the web applications installer within your new Plesk control panel.

Backups – Your old backups will be incompatible with Plesk, please make additiona FTP copies of your data if required.

Frontpage – It is no longer possible to upload using FrontPage HTTP. If you still use Frontpage, you must upload using FrontPage FTP or any other FTP client to upload your files.

Migration – we will handle the conversion and migration of your data as efficiently as possible. If you are using Ensim specific code you will need to make changes to your code to continue functionality in Plesk.

Support – If you require any help or support after the migration, please log a ticket with the helpdesk and ask for “Ensim Migration” support. Ensim support is not available through the Live Support facility.

To parse PHP code inside a .html file you will need to a create a .htaccess file in your document root directory /httpdocs and insert the following code:

RemoveHandler .html .htm
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .htm .html

You will need to ensure that PHP is running as Apache, to check  this in Plesk you will need to login to your client account, select the domain name and go to Web hosting settings.

Re: Upgrade features on Plesk to latest offering

The range of features on offer today may be more than when you purchased your account. There is no need to lose out. This is not a new customers only offer.

We are now offering more hosted domains on all accounts to new cutomers however if you are an existing customer, don’t worry – you can upgrade to the latest offering for free!

Here is what you need to do:

  • Look at the Hosting page for your plan current feature list
  • The multiple domain allowances have increased for all accounts
  • The database allowances have in some cases been reduced
  • Log a ticket with the Helpdesk asking for a “feature update”
  • Include your clientXXXXX Plesk login within the ticket for a fast upgrade
  • Your existing data will not be affected and will remain intact

If you provide the correct clientXXXXX ID and your domain name from the outset in your ticket, your upgrade may be completed within an hour. The ticket will be updated once the upgrade is complete.

If your site becomes too busy for shared hosting or VPS, you may need your own dedicated server.

A dedicated server is a server whose resources are entirely dedicated to your site. None of the server resources are shared with any third parties.

Usually the maintenance of a dedicated server is your responsibility however some hosts offer managed dedicated server solutions – at a price.

You will need a dedicated server if your site becomes very busy and the resource requirements are greater than that provided by a shared hosting service.

Nov 06

All cheap hosting plans that you purchase from a company are shared hosting plans.

A shared hosting plan means that you have purchased/leased webspace and resources from a server that is also offering webspace and resources to other non-related clients.

Shared hosting is the cheapest way to get web space and email facilities. Server maintenance and function is the responsibility of the web host.

Alternatives to shared hosting include VPS hosting and Dedicated Server hosting.

Re: Wordpress Error: Unable to create directory /wp-content/uploads/

To resolve errors uploading to WordPress eg. new themes, please try the following steps:

  • In WordPress Settings/Media (or Settings/Miscellaneus depending on your version) change upload folder from “/wp-content/uploads” to “wp-content/uploads” – ie. remove the leading forward slash.
  • Set wp-content to 775
  • Set wp-content/uploads to 777

That should solve the problem.

Re: I can’t ping my website

You can usually ping your website such as “ping mydomain.com’ which will reveal the IP address of your site and that the server is responding.

Unfortunately this can also be used by hackers to find potentially hackable sites and servers.

For this reason our firewalls block all ICMP PING requests.

Our multi domain hosting packages are perfect for clients who need to manage more than one website.

Most hosting providers only allow you to host one domain name with each hosting account. Our multi domain hosting accounts allow you to share the resources of your hosting account with other domains.

This in effect means you can host entirely separate websites without purchasing extra web hosting accounts.

For instance. If you have a web hosting account with 5GB webspace and your account supports up to 5 hosted domains, then you can share this resource between your domains by creating 5 totally separate websites with a webspace allowance of 1GB each. You do not need to split the resources equally.

Some applications require open_basedir to be “loosened” a little, if you are installing an application such as ClickCart Pro then the open_basedir will need to be changed so that the installation can create the required sub directories and then complete.

Let’s assume your domain name is domain.com (no such luck, I know!)

# vi /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/vhost.conf

Add the following lines:

<Directory /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs>
php_admin_value open_basedir “/var/www/vhosts/domain.com”
php_admin_flag safe_mode off
</Directory>

Now we need to rebuild the apache configuration:

# /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/websrvmng -u –vhost-name=domain.com

Job done, your open_basdir setting has been moved up one level (from /httpdocs to /) within your domain name sub folder.

Have you logged into WordPress and you get the message “WordPress update available, click here to upgrade”, you click “here”, wait and then the upgrade fails?

This is a common problem so we would like to post the solution for our clients:

1) Ensure that your FTP user is the owner of your WordPress install directory, this is most likely not the problem unless you have your own dedicated server and installed WordPress using root user.

2) Ensure that your WordPress directory has the correct permissions, it should be 755. This is the most probable problem. Change the permissions to 755 and then try the WordPress upgrade again.

If your FTP user is not the owner of your WordPress directory OR your WordPress directory has permissions other than 755, your WordPress install/upgrade will fail with the message “Could not copy file: /var/www/wordpress/wp-activate.php”.

As you are reading this, you are probably unaware of how easy it really is to install a web application such as WordPress. It really is just a few button clicks with Plesk.

  1. Login to the Plesk Control Panel
  2. Click on “web hosting”
  3. Make sure “php safe mode” is OFF
  4. Click on “Web Applications”
  5. Click “Install Web Application”
  6. Type “wordpress” and press “Search”
  7. Click “Install”
  8. Agree to the WordPress user license
  9. Select “document root” if you dont want wordpress in a sub directory
  10. Set the WordPress database password
  11. Set the WordPress admin password
  12. Enter your email address for admin notifications
  13. Enter your wordpress page title (can be changed later)
  14. Click “install”
  15. WordPress is now installed!

Ok, so there are 15 items in the list – really, it would have taken you longer to read the list than to install WordPress. Install WordPress now and see how easy it is, you can just delete it afterwards – and that’s just as easy as pressing one button!
