Before you use .dev

Plan HTTPS before launching: .dev is an encrypted-by-default namespace. Browsers require a working HTTPS connection and a valid SSL certificate to load .dev websites. Registry guidance (opens in a new tab) Ask for help with HTTPS and SSL.

Is .dev right for your idea?

Show the work behind your name

Use .dev for a portfolio of projects, a documentation site or a home for an open-source tool. A short personal or project name can make the address practical for a CV, repository profile or conference slide.

HTTPS is part of the setup

The .dev ending is on the browser HSTS preload list. Set up an SSL certificate and HTTPS on your hosting or website platform before sharing the address. Registering the domain does not automatically install a certificate on a website hosted elsewhere.

Choose a name that can outlast one release

For a tool or service, consider a stable project name instead of including a version number. You can organise versions and documentation within the site, keeping the main address useful as the software changes.

A little more detail

Questions about .dev domains

Why will a .dev website not load over plain HTTP?

Browsers require HTTPS for .dev. The website needs a valid SSL certificate and HTTPS configured at its hosting provider; an HTTP-only site will not work normally in browsers.

Can I connect .dev to my existing development platform?

Yes, if the platform supports your custom domain and can provide HTTPS for it. Follow its DNS and certificate setup instructions before sending visitors to the site.

Is a .dev domain a private development environment?

No. It is a public domain ending. Protect staging sites and private documentation with access controls; the name alone does not make them private.

What happens after I find a domain?

Add one or more available names to your basket, then continue to registration. Enter the owner details and review the registration term and total before payment. Availability is provisional until the registrar confirms registration.

Will UKC charge me automatically at renewal?

No. UKC sends renewal reminders and an invoice. You need to pay the invoice to renew; UKC does not automatically charge you. Keep your contact details current so you receive reminders.
