Choose with confidence
Use .dev for a portfolio of projects, a documentation site or a home for an open-source tool. A short personal or project name can make the address practical for a CV, repository profile or conference slide.
The .dev ending is on the browser HSTS preload list. Set up an SSL certificate and HTTPS on your hosting or website platform before sharing the address. Registering the domain does not automatically install a certificate on a website hosted elsewhere.
For a tool or service, consider a stable project name instead of including a version number. You can organise versions and documentation within the site, keeping the main address useful as the software changes.

About this extension
Google Registry operates .dev through Charleston Road Registry. It sets the extension’s registration policies, including the requirement for HTTPS on .dev websites. IANA: .dev delegation record (opens in a new tab)
Google introduced .dev as a place to showcase projects, share knowledge and build technology communities. General availability began on 28 February 2019, following an early-access period. Its HTTPS requirement was part of the launch, so a live .dev website needs a valid certificate and working HTTPS from the outset.
Background checked 6 September 2026 against the sources linked above.

A little more detail
Browsers require HTTPS for .dev. The website needs a valid SSL certificate and HTTPS configured at its hosting provider; an HTTP-only site will not work normally in browsers.
