Choose with confidence

Is .com right for your idea?

Keep room for your business to grow

If you sell across borders or expect your audience to expand, .com lets your name stand without a country-specific ending. It can suit an online service, independent brand or consultancy serving customers in several markets.

If the exact name is already taken

Try a distinctive version of your brand rather than adding a string of numbers. An extra word that explains your product can be easier to remember. Alternatively, compare .co.uk for a UK audience or .net for a network or technical project.

Use one main address consistently

If you register .com alongside a UK domain, choose which one should appear in your website links and emails. You can forward an additional domain to the main site instead of maintaining two copies of the same website.

From a commercial category to a worldwide address

The original domain categories described in 1984 included COM for commercial organisations. IANA records .com’s introduction in 1985. Today it is open to individuals as well as businesses, giving it a role well beyond its original commercial category and without a country-specific ending.

Questions about .com domains

Can a UK business use a .com domain?

Yes. .com is available to UK businesses and individuals as well as registrants elsewhere.

Is .com better than .co.uk?

It depends on your audience. .com is a useful international choice; .co.uk makes the UK connection more explicit. Neither replaces a clear name and a useful website.

Can I get a .com domain without web hosting?

Yes. Register the address first and connect a website or other services when you are ready. A domain registration does not require buying a hosting plan.

What happens after I find a domain?

Add one or more available names to your basket, then continue to registration. Enter the owner details and review the registration term and total before payment. Availability is provisional until the registrar confirms registration.

Will UKC charge me automatically at renewal?

No. UKC sends renewal reminders and an invoice. You need to pay the invoice to renew; UKC does not automatically charge you. Keep your contact details current so you receive reminders.
