Is .net right for your idea?

Where .net makes sense

Consider .net for a technical service, a community network or an online resource. It works best when the ending fits the identity of the project, rather than being chosen only because another version of the name is taken.

Check how the name sounds aloud

Customers may assume .com when they remember an address. Say your proposed .net domain aloud and make the ending clear in branding and email signatures. A distinctive name helps visitors reach the right place.

Compare .net with .dev

For a developer portfolio or software project, .dev is another option with a more explicit development identity. Unlike .dev, .net does not impose an extension-wide browser HTTPS requirement, although HTTPS remains a good choice for a public website.

Questions about .net domains

Do I need to be an internet provider to register .net?

No. .net registration is open to individuals and organisations beyond network and internet providers.

Is .net only for websites?

No. You can use DNS to connect supported email and other services, or register the name before deciding what to build.

What if the matching .com belongs to someone else?

Review whether visitors could confuse the two names. If the existing site operates in the same field, a more distinctive name may be a better choice than changing only the ending.

What happens after I find a domain?

Add one or more available names to your basket, then continue to registration. Enter the owner details and review the registration term and total before payment. Availability is provisional until the registrar confirms registration.

Will UKC charge me automatically at renewal?

No. UKC sends renewal reminders and an invoice. You need to pay the invoice to renew; UKC does not automatically charge you. Keep your contact details current so you receive reminders.
