A registrar needs accurate contact details, but that does not mean every detail is public
The public registration record depends on the extension, registry policy, registrar and applicable data-protection rules. Current .uk lookup results focus on registration status, registrar and nameservers. Generic-domain data is now normally accessed through RDAP, which can provide different levels of access.
What information can a domain lookup show?

Limit public exposure
Where supported, registration-data privacy or redaction reduces the personal information displayed in a public lookup.
Prevent unauthorised control
Strong passwords, two-factor authentication, registrar locks and protected recovery channels defend the account itself.
Privacy cannot prevent every disclosure. Registries and registrars may provide non-public data through lawful, policy-based or appropriately authorised processes.

Use accurate details
False contact information can prevent recovery and may breach the registration agreement.
Secure the account
Use a unique password and enable two-factor authentication where available.
Protect the recovery email
The recovery address should be secure, monitored and independent of a domain that could expire.
Review locks and renewal
Keep transfer protection and renewal settings appropriate, and respond to genuine account notices.

Domain privacy questions
Can I register a domain anonymously?
No. The registrar and registry require valid registration data. Public redaction or a privacy service is not permission to provide a false identity.
Are .co.uk owner details public?
Current public .uk lookup output does not simply publish every registrant contact field. The registry and registrar still retain the data needed to manage the registration and meet policy or legal duties.
What replaced WHOIS for generic domains?
RDAP is the structured registration-data protocol used for generic-domain lookup. People still use the term WHOIS informally, but the access method and displayed data have changed.
Does privacy stop domain theft?
No. Privacy reduces public exposure. Account security, two-factor authentication, registrar locks and secure recovery processes help prevent unauthorised control.
Can public data vary by extension?
Yes. Registry policies and applicable law differ. Check the rules and current lookup output for the extension you intend to register.
