Can an Expired Domain Name Be Transferred?

Expired domain transfers

An expired domain may need renewal or recovery before it can be transferred

The answer depends on the extension, registry status and current registrar. Do not wait for expiry to start a transfer, because locks, redemption and deletion stages can restrict the available actions.

Check the lifecycle stage

Recently expired

The domain may remain renewable in the current account, but normal website and email service can be interrupted.

Redemption or recovery

The registry may require a separate restore procedure and charge before the domain returns to active status.

Pending deletion

Renewal and transfer may no longer be possible. The name can eventually return to public availability without any guarantee you can re-register it.

UK and generic domains use different transfers

.uk family

A transfer normally uses the destination registrar IPS tag. Check the current domain status and destination instructions before changing it.

.com and other generic domains

A transfer normally uses an AuthInfo code and requires an eligible active status. Transfer locks and registry lifecycle rules can apply.

Safest order of action

  1. 1
    Check status

Open My Domains and review expiry, invoice and registry status.

  2. 2
    Recover if required

Renew or restore with the current registrar before a transfer if the status demands it.

  3. 3
    Follow the destination process

Obtain the correct IPS tag or transfer instructions and keep contact email working.

Do not abandon an important domain

If the domain carries a website, email or brand, renew it before expiry and start transfers early. Waiting for deletion risks service loss and permanent loss of the name.

Next step

Check the domain before taking action

Open My Domains or ask UKC to confirm the current lifecycle stage.
