Who can register?

Nominet describes .org.uk as intended for not-for-profit or public-service enterprises. This intended use is guidance, not a requirement to hold registered-charity status. Registry guidance (opens in a new tab)

Choose with confidence

Is .org.uk right for your idea?

Choose an address your members recognise

Use the name your group already uses on notices, membership forms and social pages. If that name is shared by several groups, adding your town or activity can help people identify the right organisation.

.org.uk or .org?

Choose .org.uk when the UK connection is part of your identity. Compare .org for a group with a broader audience or international membership. Both can support a community website; the choice is about how you present the group.

Plan for the next volunteer

Use accurate organisation and contact details when registering. Agree who will receive renewal reminders and keep those details current when committee roles change. A domain should remain manageable when the person who built the website moves on.

The story behind .org.uk

Not-for-profit branch of the UK domain family
Registry operator
Nominet

Nominet operates .org.uk within the UK registry. Its rules describe the ending’s intended use; the domain itself does not certify an organisation’s charitable status. Nominet: the UK registry (opens in a new tab)

A place for organisations with a UK focus

.org.uk brings together an organisational identity and a UK connection. Within Nominet’s domain family, its intended role is for not-for-profit and public-service enterprises, alongside the commercial focus of .co.uk. This gives a local club or community project a way to express both its purpose and the audience it serves.

Questions about .org.uk domains

Must we be a registered charity to use .org.uk?

No. Nominet’s intended-use guidance covers not-for-profit and public-service enterprises; it is not a registered-charity accreditation scheme.

Does a .org.uk domain prove an organisation is a charity?

No. The domain ending does not certify charitable status. Explain your organisation and any applicable registration details clearly on the website.

Can our group start with a simple page?

Yes. UKC includes a single-page builder for a basic introduction and contact information. You can connect a fuller website later.

What happens after I find a domain?

Add one or more available names to your basket, then continue to registration. Enter the owner details and review the registration term and total before payment. Availability is provisional until the registrar confirms registration.

Will UKC charge me automatically at renewal?

No. UKC sends renewal reminders and an invoice. You need to pay the invoice to renew; UKC does not automatically charge you. Keep your contact details current so you receive reminders.
