Updated August 2026: this article replaces an obsolete Flash tutorial with current, accessible guidance.
SEO improves through consistent work rather than a one-off trick. These five steps create a useful order of operations for most small websites.
1. Check that important pages are accessible
Confirm they return HTTP 200, use HTTPS, work on mobile and are not accidentally blocked or marked noindex. Correct broken internal links and misleading redirects.
2. Match the visitor’s intent
Identify the question or task behind a search. A service page, comparison, definition and troubleshooting guide serve different needs even when they mention similar words.
3. Make each page genuinely useful
Add clear facts, examples, limitations and next steps. Remove obsolete claims and duplicated filler. Use a descriptive title and headings that make the page easy to scan.
4. Improve site structure
Link important pages from relevant sections using meaningful link text. Keep navigation predictable and submit a sitemap that contains the canonical URLs you want indexed.
5. Measure and iterate
Use Search Console to review queries, pages, clicks, impressions and indexing issues. Make focused changes, record the date and allow enough time to judge the result.
