Beginner’s domain guide
Search, check the full cost, register, then connect your domain
To buy a domain name, choose a registrar, search for an available name, review the registration term and renewal price, enter accurate registrant details, then complete the order. You receive the right to use the domain for the paid registration period and must renew it to keep that right.
What are you buying when you register a domain?
You do not buy a domain permanently in the same way as physical property. You become the registrant and receive the contractual right to use the name for a registration term. The registrar manages the registration with the relevant registry and provides the controls needed to renew, transfer and configure it.
The person or organisation recorded as having the right to use the domain.
The provider through which you register, renew, transfer and manage the domain.
The organisation maintaining the authoritative register for an extension, such as Nominet for .uk.
The period for which the domain is registered before it needs to be renewed.
What to check before buying a domain
A clear name is easier to share and less likely to be mistyped.
Availability does not mean the name is free from somebody else’s legal rights.
Choose a UK signal for a UK market or a broader extension for an international identity.
A first-term offer can differ from the later renewal price.
Check the amount due now and the basis on which prices are displayed.
Confirm the minimum term and whether the order contains more than one year.
Understand what the registry collects and what may appear in public lookup services.
Know when invoices are raised, how reminders arrive and what happens after expiry.
Check the provider’s transfer controls, locks and any applicable transfer cost.
Which domain extension should you choose?
The extension is part of the address and helps set audience expectations. It should support the brand, not make the name unnecessarily long or confusing.
| Extension | Common positioning | Often suited to | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| .co.uk | UK association and commercial intent | Businesses focused on UK customers | Whether the matching .uk and .com are available |
| .uk | Short, direct UK identity | Brands wanting a concise UK address | Who owns the matching .co.uk |
| .com | Broad international identity | Businesses serving several countries | Whether the preferred name is clear and affordable |
| Other extensions | Sector, community or creative positioning | Projects where the ending adds useful meaning | Eligibility rules, familiarity and renewal cost |
A keyword in the domain is not required for SEO. A memorable brand that earns trust, links and repeat visits is usually more useful than forcing several search terms into the address.

Domain buying questions
Can I buy a domain name permanently?
No. A domain is registered for a term and must be renewed to keep the right to use it. Some extensions allow multi-year registration, but the registration still has an expiry date.
How much does a domain cost in the UK?
It depends on the extension, registrar, registration term and any offer. Compare the amount due now with the renewal price and check whether VAT is included.
Do I need hosting when I buy a domain?
No. You can register and park a domain without buying hosting. Hosting is required when you want to run a full website or application on a web server.
Can I use the domain for email?
Yes. You can use email forwarding or a hosted mailbox service. DNS MX and authentication records must be configured for the chosen mail provider.
What if the domain is already registered?
Choose a clear alternative, consider another extension or check whether the current registrant is openly offering it for sale. Do not assume a domain with no website is available.
Can I transfer the domain later?
Usually, yes, subject to the extension’s transfer policy, the domain status and any applicable lock. Keep registrant details current and retain access to the account email.
Ownership, renewal and transfer explanations follow current ICANN registrant guidance and the current Nominet .UK policies.
