The .it Registry accepts eligible registrants connected to the EEA, Vatican City, San Marino, Switzerland or the United Kingdom. Supply accurate identity or organisation details, confirm a right to use the name and check that it is not reserved.
Who can register a .it domain?
UK individuals
An adult with UK citizenship or residence can be eligible. The Registry may require an identity-document number where there is no equivalent tax code.
UK organisations and businesses
An organisation established in the United Kingdom can register using its complete legal name, registered-office details and tax or registration information.
EEA registrants
Adults with citizenship or residence, and organisations established in the European Economic Area, are eligible under the Registry rules.
Other accepted locations
Vatican City, the Republic of San Marino and Switzerland are also expressly included by Registro .it.
A right to use the name
The applicant must be entitled to use the requested name and must not prejudice another party’s rights.
An approved registrar
Registro .it operates the registry but does not register names directly for the public. Orders are handled through registrars.

What are the .it domain-name rules?
Length
The registered label must contain at least 3 and no more than 63 characters.
Standard characters
ASCII names can use letters a to z, digits 0 to 9 and hyphens. Supported internationalised characters follow the Registry’s technical character set.
Hyphen placement
A name cannot begin or end with a hyphen. The opening sequence reserved for encoded internationalised names is also restricted.
Reserved names
Some geographic, institutional, technical and national terms are reserved or available only to an entitled public body.

Ineligible registrant location
The individual or organisation does not have the required connection to an accepted country or territory.
Incomplete or inconsistent data
The legal name, address, identifier, date of birth or organisation details do not match the registrant.
A reserved or invalid name
The label breaks character rules or belongs to a geographic, institutional or technical category that cannot be freely assigned.
Third-party rights
The requested name may infringe another party’s rights or be challenged through the Registry dispute process.

Can a UK resident register a .it domain?
Yes. Registro .it expressly includes adult UK citizens or residents and organisations established in the United Kingdom.
Do I need an Italian fiscal code?
Not every foreign registrant has an Italian fiscal code. The Registry technical guidance allows an identity-document number for eligible people in countries where there is no equivalent. Enter the identifier requested for the selected registrant type.
Can a child register a .it domain?
The Registry’s public eligibility guidance specifies adults for individual registrations. Use an eligible adult or organisation as the genuine registrant where appropriate.
How many .it domains can I register?
Registro .it states that there is no limit on the number an eligible registrant can register, subject to availability, policy and third-party rights.
Are .it domains free?
No. The Registry states that .it registrations are not assigned free of charge. A registrar sets the customer registration and renewal prices, so check the live order summary.
Are my details shown publicly?
Registry data handling follows its current Whois and privacy policies and depends on the data field and registrant type. Do not rely on the old assumption that every contact field is publicly displayed.
