Does HTTPS Improve Google Search Ranking?

HTTPS and Google Search

Use HTTPS for security and trust, not as a promise of a ranking boost

Google recommends HTTPS and generally prefers the HTTPS version when equivalent HTTP and HTTPS URLs exist. HTTPS is important for protecting visitors and avoiding browser warnings, but installing a certificate does not guarantee a higher position or replace useful content.

How do you move a website to HTTPS correctly?

Follow the sequence and stop before any step that does not match the service shown in your UKC account.

  1. 1
    Issue a trusted certificate

Use Let’s Encrypt in Plesk or the correct certificate route for the service. Cover every public hostname, including www where used.

  2. 2
    Fix the site before redirecting

Update internal links, canonical tags, forms, images, scripts and styles so the HTTPS page has no mixed-content errors.

  3. 3
    Redirect HTTP consistently

Use a single permanent route from each HTTP URL to its HTTPS equivalent. Avoid chains, loops and broad redirects to the homepage.

  4. 4
    Verify search and customer journeys

Check canonical URLs, sitemap entries, Search Console HTTPS reporting, analytics, checkout, forms and third-party callbacks.

What does HTTPS change for customers and SEO?

The strongest reasons are confidentiality, integrity, identity and a consistent secure public URL.

Encrypts traffic

It reduces the chance that intermediaries can read or alter information moving between the visitor and website.

Authenticates the hostname

A trusted certificate helps the browser confirm that it connected to the intended domain.

Removes browser warnings

Current browsers warn or restrict many insecure experiences, especially around forms and credentials.

Consolidates the preferred URL

Correct redirects and canonical tags help search systems treat HTTPS as the main version rather than splitting signals.

Common questions

Will SSL move my page to number one?

No. HTTPS is a security and technical baseline, not a guaranteed ranking result.

Is free Let’s Encrypt sufficient?

For many ordinary hosted websites it provides trusted encryption. The appropriate certificate depends on the service and validation needs.

Should I enable HSTS immediately?

Only after every required hostname and dependency works reliably over HTTPS. A long HSTS policy can make mistakes harder to recover.

Why does the browser still warn after SSL installation?

The hostname may reach another server, the certificate may not cover it, or the page may load insecure resources. Test the complete route.

Secure the site correctly

Issue SSL, fix mixed content and use direct permanent redirects

Then focus SEO work on the page quality and customer task rather than expecting the certificate alone to change ranking.
