Outlook Express Email Setup: Legacy Guidance

Legacy email software

Outlook Express is obsolete and should not be used for a live business mailbox

This page remains for customers recovering an old computer or identifying historic settings. Outlook Express belongs to unsupported versions of Windows and cannot be relied upon for current security and TLS standards. Move the mailbox to a supported version of Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird or another maintained app.

STATUSUnsupportedNo safe everyday use
KEEPExport old messagesBefore changing the PC
MOVEUse a current appModern TLS support

Why is the old video no longer the right setup method?

Old encryption support

Historic clients and operating systems may not support the TLS versions and certificate checks expected by current mail servers.

No security maintenance

Outlook Express is not receiving fixes for newly discovered vulnerabilities or modern authentication behaviour.

Different menu paths

Current Outlook is a different product. Instructions for Tools, Accounts and old identity files do not match it.

Local-only messages

POP configurations may have removed mail from the server, leaving the only copy inside the old computer profile.

What should I do with an old Outlook Express installation?

  1. 1
    Do not delete the profile

Keep the old computer and its user files intact until important mail and contacts have been exported and checked.

  2. 2
    Identify local mail

Compare the folders with webmail. Messages missing from webmail may exist only in the Outlook Express data files.

  3. 3
    Export or migrate

Use a trusted migration process suitable for the old Windows version, ideally while the computer remains offline.

  4. 4
    Configure a maintained app

Add the mailbox to a current device using the full email address, mailbox password and secure server settings.

What are the current UKC mailbox settings?

ServiceServerPort and security
Custom Domain Emailwebmail.ukc.ukIMAP 993 SSL/TLS, SMTP 587 STARTTLS
Shared hosting mailboxYour assigned server, such as ukc10.uk through ukc13.ukIMAP 993 SSL/TLS, SMTP 587 STARTTLS
UsernameThe complete email address, with SMTP authentication enabled

SMTP port 465 with implicit SSL/TLS is an alternative when an application supports it. POP 995 is available but IMAP is usually the better choice across several devices.

Legacy email questions

Can UKC make Outlook Express secure again?

No. The problem is the obsolete client and operating system, not a mailbox control that UKC can enable.

Will changing app delete my messages?

Adding the mailbox to a new app does not normally delete server mail. Old POP messages may be local only, so export and verify them first.

Where can I read current Outlook instructions?

Use the linked UKC Outlook guide. Current Outlook screens and capabilities differ substantially from Outlook Express.

Move to supported email

Recover any local mail, then configure a maintained application

Use the current guide and the certificate-safe server assigned to your mailbox.
