How to Set Up Email on iPhone or iPad

iPhone and iPad email setup

Add your UKC mailbox to Apple Mail using secure IMAP and SMTP

In current iOS and iPadOS, open Settings, Apps, Mail, Mail Accounts and Add Account. Choose Other, add a Mail Account, then use IMAP 993 with SSL/TLS and authenticated SMTP 587 with STARTTLS.

Get these details before opening Settings

1

Full email address

Use the complete mailbox address as the incoming and outgoing username.

2

Mailbox password

Test it in webmail. It may not be the same as the password for your UKC account.

3

Exact server hostname

Copy it from the Plesk Mail Client Setup information so it matches the server certificate.

4

A separate test address

Use another mailbox to test sending and receiving after setup.

iPhone and iPad mail settings

Field Value Notes
Account type IMAP Recommended for multiple devices
Incoming host name Exact hostname shown in Plesk Use the supported server name
Incoming port 993 SSL enabled
Outgoing host name Exact hostname shown in Plesk Do not use an internet provider’s SMTP server
Outgoing port 587 Use STARTTLS where shown
Outgoing authentication Password Required
User name Complete email address Required for incoming and outgoing servers
Password Mailbox password Enter it for incoming and outgoing servers

SMTP port 465 with SSL/TLS is the alternative when the device or network cannot use STARTTLS on 587. Secure POP3 uses port 995, but IMAP is recommended for normal phone, tablet and webmail use.

Add the mailbox on iPhone or iPad

1. Open Mail Accounts

Go to Settings, Apps, Mail, Mail Accounts and Add Account. On older system versions, the path may begin Settings, Mail or Settings, Passwords and Accounts.

2. Choose Other

Enter the complete email address, then choose Add Other Account and Mail Account when asked.

3. Select IMAP

Enter your name, address, password and description. Select IMAP and complete both Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server.

4. Save and test

After verification, save the account. Send to another address, reply and confirm both messages appear.

Check an account that is already installed

Open Settings, Apps, Mail, Mail Accounts and select the account. Tap Account to review incoming details. Under Outgoing Mail Server, open SMTP, select the primary server and check the hostname, username, password, SSL setting and port. An old password saved only under SMTP can cause sending to fail while receiving continues to work.

iPhone and iPad troubleshooting

Cannot verify server identity

Do not continue past an unexpected certificate. Compare the hostname with the Plesk Mail Client Setup information and correct it.

Cannot send mail

Open the primary SMTP server and confirm it is enabled with port 587, TLS, the full email address and the current mailbox password.

Password is repeatedly requested

Test webmail, then update the password in both the incoming account and primary outgoing server.

Messages will not move to Bin

Open Advanced mailbox settings and make sure Drafts, Sent, Deleted and Archive mailboxes point to the intended folders on the IMAP server.

If the mailbox also fails in webmail, follow the complete sending and receiving checks.

iPhone and iPad email questions

Why should I use IMAP rather than POP?

IMAP keeps messages, folders and read state synchronised with the server and other devices. POP is intended for downloading messages and can create an inconsistent multi-device mailbox.

What should I enter in Description?

Use a recognisable label such as Work Email. It is only the name shown on your device.

Why can I receive but not send?

Incoming IMAP and outgoing SMTP are separate connections. Check the primary SMTP server, authentication, username, password, port and TLS.

Can I use the same mailbox on several Apple devices?

Yes. Configure each as IMAP and allow the server folders to synchronise.
