Gmail app setup for Android
Add your UKC mailbox to the Gmail app as a personal IMAP account
In Gmail, tap your profile picture, Add another account, Other, then choose Personal (IMAP). Use IMAP port 993 with SSL/TLS and authenticated SMTP port 587 with STARTTLS.
Gmail app and Gmail service are not the same thing
The Gmail app can display a compatible mailbox hosted by another provider. Adding a UKC mailbox to the app does not move the mailbox to Google and does not turn the address into a Gmail account. Messages remain on the UKC mail service and the app connects using IMAP and SMTP.
Confirm the mailbox
Make sure it exists in Plesk and is not only an email forwarder.
Test webmail
Sign in and send a message before changing Android settings.
Copy the hostname
Use the exact value shown in Plesk Mail Client Setup.
Update Gmail
Install current Gmail app and Android updates before setup.
Gmail Android IMAP and SMTP settings
| Gmail field | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Account type | Personal (IMAP) | Do not choose POP3 for normal multi-device use |
| Username | Complete email address | Use for incoming and outgoing login |
| Password | Mailbox password | Not your Google password |
| IMAP server | Exact hostname shown in Plesk | Must match the supported mail server |
| IMAP port | 993 | Security type SSL/TLS |
| SMTP server | Exact hostname shown in Plesk | Use the UKC outgoing service |
| SMTP port | 587 | Security type STARTTLS |
| Require sign-in | Enabled | Use the complete address and mailbox password |
If the app offers SSL/TLS rather than STARTTLS for outgoing mail, use SMTP port 465. Secure POP3 uses port 995, but the Gmail app and modern multi-device workflows are better suited to IMAP.
Add the account to Gmail on Android
Open Gmail, tap the profile picture at the top right and choose Add another account.
Enter the full email address, tap Next and select Personal (IMAP).
Enter the password and incoming settings, then complete the outgoing server with Require sign-in enabled.
Choose sync and notification options, set the sender name, then test sending and receiving with another address.
Gmail app troubleshooting
Could not open connection to server
Check the exact hostname, internet connection, security type and port. Test webmail to confirm the service is available.
Username or password incorrect
Use the complete email address and test the mailbox password in webmail. Check for unwanted spaces after pasting.
Receiving works but sending fails
Check SMTP port 587, STARTTLS, Require sign-in and the complete username. The outgoing password may need to be entered again.
Mail is delayed
Review Gmail sync frequency, background data and battery restrictions. Confirm new mail appears promptly in webmail before blaming the mailbox.
Use the email diagnostic guide if webmail or several devices are affected.
Gmail Android questions
Does adding the mailbox copy everything into Gmail?
No. With IMAP, the app synchronises messages and folders held by the UKC mailbox service.
Should I choose Google or Other?
Choose Other for a standard UKC hosted mailbox. Choose Google only if Google Workspace or Gmail actually hosts the mailbox.
Can Gmail show several accounts together?
Yes. The app can show individual accounts or an All inboxes view, while each mailbox remains separate.
Why is there no POP option?
Current Gmail app guidance favours IMAP for external accounts. IMAP is also the recommended UKC choice for phones and multiple devices.
