What to Do After Registering a Domain Name

Your domain is registered

Secure the account, confirm the registration and choose what the domain should do

After buying a domain name, first confirm it appears in My Domains and complete any genuine registrant-validation request. Then decide whether to keep it parked, build a website, forward it or connect it to another provider. You do not need to make every decision on the first day.

What should you check on the first day?

1

Find the domain in My Domains

Confirm the exact spelling and extension appear in the UKC Client Area. A completed order should not be treated as proof that a mistyped name can be changed later.

2

Check the registrant details

Make sure the correct person or organisation controls the registration and that the contact email remains accessible.

3

Complete genuine validation

Registry or registrar validation messages can be time-sensitive. Open the account through a known address if you are unsure whether an email is genuine.

4

Protect access and renewal

Use a unique password, enable two-factor authentication and review the renewal setting, account email and payment details.

Which tools are included with a UKC domain?

Build

Domain Website Builder

Create an AI-assisted single-page website, edit it whenever needed and use the advanced HTML editor for direct code changes.

Control

DNS Manager

Manage records and use presets for services such as Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.

Redirect

Web Forwarding

Send visitors to another website using a permanent or temporary redirect.

Receive

Email Forwarding

Create addresses at the domain and forward incoming messages to an inbox you already use.

Open the domain in My Domains to see the tools available for its current configuration. There are no charges for changes made with the included parking tools.

How do you connect the domain to hosting or another service?

A provider will normally ask you to change nameservers or specific DNS records. These are different methods, so follow the instruction supplied for the service rather than changing both.

Change individual DNS records

Use DNS Manager when the provider gives values such as A, AAAA, CNAME, MX or TXT records and the domain should continue using UKC parking nameservers.

Change the nameservers

Use this when the new provider will control the complete DNS zone. Save the existing website, email and verification records first.

Shared-hosting customers should use the nameservers shown in the hosting welcome message for their assigned server. If a working website or email service already exists, read the DNS Manager guide before making a change.

Does the domain registration include email?

It includes Email Forwarding, but forwarding is not a stored mailbox. Choose the service based on whether you only need to receive messages or want a full address for sending and receiving.

Email Forwarding

Forward incoming messages to an existing inbox. There is no separate mailbox storage or webmail login, and normal mailbox sending is not included.

Custom Domain Email or hosting mailbox

Use a paid mailbox when you need webmail, storage and normal sending and receiving through email applications using IMAP and SMTP.

Use the Custom Domain Email guide to compare mailbox plans, webmail and setup.

When will the domain start working?

The registration can complete quickly, but registry and DNS information is cached across the internet. A new or changed setup may become visible at different times to different visitors. Avoid repeatedly changing settings while waiting, because that makes the result harder to diagnose.

Registration status

Check My Domains and the current registry lookup. A public lookup may not show private contact data even when the registration is valid.

Website and email status

Check the live nameservers and DNS route separately. A registered domain still needs the correct records for each service.

Questions after registering a domain

Do I have to build a website immediately?

No. You can leave the domain parked and decide later. Keep the registration and account contact details current.

Can I change from forwarding to a website later?

Yes. The domain tools can be changed whenever your requirements change. Remove or replace the old forwarding when the new website is ready.

Does buying the domain mean I own it forever?

No. A domain is registered for a term and must be renewed to keep the right to use it.

Can I correct a spelling mistake after registration?

Normally no. A domain is registered exactly as ordered. A different spelling is a separate domain registration, so check the order carefully before payment.

Can I connect Wix, Squarespace, Shopify or another platform?

Yes. Follow that provider’s current domain-connection instructions and enter the supplied nameservers or DNS records in the UKC domain controls.

Can I transfer the domain later?

Usually yes, subject to the extension’s rules, current status and any applicable transfer lock. Keep the registrant and account details accurate.

Choose the next step when you are ready

Open My Domains to build, forward or connect the name

Save the existing settings before changing a live service, and ask support if the provider’s instructions are unclear.
