Domain availability explained
A search result is a moment-in-time check, not a reservation
A domain remains available to other applicants until the registry accepts a completed registration. Another person can register it between your search and checkout, or a registry validation can reveal that an apparently available name is reserved or unavailable.
What should you do when choosing an available name?
Follow the sequence and stop before any step that does not match the service shown in your UKC account.
- 1Search several sensible alternatives
Prepare a short list so a taken or restricted first choice does not stop the project.
- 2Complete the order promptly
A search does not place a hold. Review the spelling and holder details, then finish checkout when ready.
- 3Wait for registration confirmation
The registrar submits the request to the registry. Treat the name as secured only after acceptance and account confirmation.
- 4Check the account and public record
Confirm it appears in My Domains with the correct holder, status and expiry before using it publicly.
Why might the result change?
Domain availability is checked across independent registry systems. The final registry transaction decides whether the name is registered.
Someone registered it first
Popular or obvious names can receive multiple searches and orders. Most registries allocate on a first completed basis.
Reserved or premium classification
A registry can reserve names or apply a special classification that is not obvious from a basic search response.
Validation or policy failure
Country and restricted domains can reject an applicant who does not satisfy the rules or provide required evidence.
Temporary registry response
A timeout, maintenance window or stale intermediary result can prevent a search from reflecting the final registry state.

Common questions
Can UKC reserve a searched name?
No. Searching normally does not reserve the domain at the registry.
Does adding it to the cart reserve it?
No. Another valid registry request can complete first.
What if the spelling is wrong after registration?
Domain registrations normally cannot be renamed. Register the correct spelling as a new domain if it is available.
Will I be charged for a registration that cannot complete?
The order must be reviewed according to its actual status and payment route. Contact support rather than assuming a second payment is needed.

Complete the order and wait for registry confirmation
Only treat the domain as secured after it appears active in the account.
