How to Change a .UK Domain IPS Tag to Another Provider

Transfer a .UK domain away

Change the Nominet registrar tag only after the new provider gives you its exact IPS tag

An IPS tag identifies the registrar responsible for a .UK domain. Changing it moves registrar management but does not normally change the domain’s nameservers, website or email. Confirm the destination account and existing services first.

How do you change the IPS tag safely?

Follow the sequence and stop before any step that does not match the service shown in your UKC account.

  1. 1
    Prepare the destination account

Place any required transfer order with the new provider and ask it for the exact Nominet IPS tag.

  2. 2
    Record current domain settings

Save the nameservers, DNS, registrant contacts and renewal date. A registrar change should not require a nameserver change.

  3. 3
    Open the UKC domain controls

Sign in to the Client Area, open My Domains and use the transfer-away or registrar-tag control for the correct .UK domain.

  4. 4
Enter the new tag and verify

Paste or type the tag exactly once, then confirm the domain appears at the destination and that website and email still work.

What changes when the IPS tag changes?

The registrar changes. The public domain name and its DNS delegation normally remain as they were unless someone separately edits them.

Registration management

Renewal and registrar controls move to the provider associated with the new tag.

Website and email

Files and mailboxes do not move. They continue only while the existing hosting and DNS remain active.

Registrant details

The registry record remains important. Confirm that the destination account shows the correct holder and contact information.

UKC services

A separate UKC hosting or email service is not automatically cancelled by moving the domain registration. Manage each service explicitly.

Common questions

Does an IPS tag apply to .com?

No. Nominet IPS tags apply to .UK domains. Many global domains use an AuthInfo or EPP code instead.

Is there a UKC fee to change the tag?

Review the current account and transfer route. The destination provider may have its own order requirements.

Will the website stop working?

Not if the nameservers and hosting remain unchanged and active. Test after the change because a separate DNS edit can still cause disruption.

What if I entered the wrong tag?

Contact the provider associated with that tag and UKC Support immediately with the domain and correct destination. Never send passwords.

Before you transfer

Confirm the new registrar and protect the working services

A registrar transfer is not a website migration. Keep hosting and email active until any separate move is complete.

How Can I Improve My Google Ranking?

Improve Google visibility

Make each important page the clearest, most useful answer for the customers you want to reach

There is no switch that guarantees a first-place Google ranking. Improve crawlability, publish accurate people-first content, earn genuine recognition, provide a strong page experience and use Search Console to learn which pages and queries need work.

FOUNDATIONCrawl and indexLet Google access the page
VALUEHelpful contentSatisfy a real customer need
FEEDBACKSearch ConsoleTrack queries, clicks and pages

A practical SEO improvement plan

  1. 1
    Choose a real customer task

Give one page a clear purpose based on the audience, service and question it should answer.

  2. 2
    Study current performance

Use Search Console queries, impressions, clicks, position and device data as evidence.

  3. 3
    Improve the page

Answer early, add original expertise, organise headings and remove obsolete or misleading material.

  4. 4
    Strengthen discovery

Link to it from relevant pages, include it in the sitemap and avoid conflicting duplicate pages.

  5. 5
    Improve the result snippet

Use a descriptive title and accurate meta description that match the page.

  6. 6
    Measure after recrawl

Allow time, compare equivalent periods and improve again from the new evidence.

What makes content useful?

Direct answer

Tell the reader what to do or know before a long introduction.

First-hand expertise

Add tested steps, product knowledge, examples and limitations that generic summaries lack.

Trustworthy claims

Support important facts, show who is responsible and avoid guarantees or invented evidence.

Clear next action

Help the visitor complete the task, compare a service or reach a person.

What technical basics matter?

Indexable canonical URL

Return a successful status, avoid noindex and declare the preferred URL when duplicates exist.

Mobile page experience

Keep text readable, controls usable and layouts free from horizontal overflow.

Internal links

Use descriptive links from relevant pages so people and search engines can discover the content.

Structured data where valid

Use only supported types that accurately match visible content. Mark-up is not a ranking guarantee.

How should you measure progress?

Watch page-level queries, impressions, clicks, click-through rate and average position in Search Console. Pair that with privacy-safe business outcomes such as useful enquiries or completed purchases. A ranking change can take days or weeks after recrawl, and seasonality or search-result features can alter clicks even when position is stable.

What should you avoid?

Should I repeat the keyword many times?

No. Write naturally using the language customers use. Repetition that makes a page awkward does not improve usefulness.

Should I buy links?

No. Link schemes can violate Google spam policies. Earn references through useful resources, genuine relationships and good work.

Should I create hundreds of similar AI pages?

Not to manipulate rankings. Google advises against scaled search-engine-first content. Every page should have a useful reason to exist.

Can anyone guarantee first place?

No credible provider can guarantee a specific organic position. Google controls its ranking systems and changes them over time.

Start with evidence

Improve one important page around one customer need

Measure it in Search Console, learn from the result and repeat the process.

Why cant I see my website after uploading?

If you can not see your website after uploading it then this could be down to one of the following common reasons,
a) If this is a new account, then your domain name can take up to 72 hours to fully connect to your hosting account.
b) If your domain name is parked with another company, maybe you have not updated the nameservers as advised when you ordered your hosting.
c) Your home page is not uploaded as index.html
d) You did not include the root folder of /var/www/html/ for Ensim servers and /httpdocs for Plesk within your ftp program prior to uploading.
e) Your computer is loading a cached version of your website, try entering the full home page http://www.yourdomainname.co.uk/index.html
Please check the above prior to raising a ticket.

How do I upload with Serif Products?

If you have used a Serif product to design your website, then it is very likely that you will not be able to upload to your webspace correctly.
Instead follow the guidelines below.
In Serif, select, File > Publish to > File Folder, then choose to save All Files to your preferred destination (we suggest initially a new empty folder).
Next, using FileZilla (downloadable from our Help page), connect to your web server account, and your new folder you created above.
Now, upload all your files from within this folder on your pc, to the root folder on your web server account.
Your web files are now uploaded.
