Choose the ending your customers will recognise, remember and trust
A domain extension is the ending after the name, such as .uk or .com. It can signal a country, community or type of organisation, but it will not rescue a confusing name or create strong search rankings by itself.
What is a domain extension?
The final label in a domain is its top-level domain. In example.uk, the top-level domain is .uk. In example.co.uk, .uk remains the country-code top-level domain and co.uk is a second-level domain beneath it. The complete registered name is example.co.uk.
Country-code extensions
Extensions such as .uk, .fr and .ca are associated with countries or territories. Registry eligibility and registration rules vary.
Generic extensions
Extensions such as .com, .org and .net are not tied to one country. Newer generic endings can describe an industry or idea.
Which domain extension fits your website?
.co.uk
A familiar option for UK businesses and organisations. It clearly communicates a UK presence and gives you more naming combinations than relying on .com alone.
.uk
A shorter UK option that can work well when brevity is important. Check how it sounds aloud and whether customers may instinctively type .co.uk.
.com
A widely recognised generic extension for businesses serving several countries. Strong names can be harder to find, so avoid awkward spelling simply to obtain one.
Specialist endings
An industry or community extension can be distinctive when customers understand it. Check renewal cost, registry rules and the risk of mistyping before committing.
Does the extension affect SEO?
Google says the top-level domain normally has little effect on ranking by itself. A country-code domain can help communicate the intended country, while generic extensions are generally not associated with one location. Useful content, reputation, links, technical quality and a good customer experience matter far more than choosing an extension because it contains a keyword.

Choose a UK signal for a UK-focused organisation or a generic ending when the audience is broader.

Review first-year price, renewal price, registration period and VAT before paying.
- 4Check names and rights
Search company names and trademarks. Domain availability does not grant a right to use another party’s brand.
- 5Think about email
A shorter, clearer domain is easier to use in addresses such as hello@yourdomain.uk.
- 6Protect only where useful
Register another important variation when it prevents real confusion, then redirect it to one primary website.
Domain extension questions
Should a UK business choose .co.uk or .com?
Choose the option that matches how customers see the business. A UK-focused business can use .co.uk confidently. A business serving several countries may prefer .com, and some organisations reasonably protect both.
Is .co.uk a top-level domain?
No. .uk is the country-code top-level domain. co.uk is a second-level domain within the .UK namespace.
Are newer extensions less trustworthy?
The ending alone does not make a website safe or unsafe. Customers may be less familiar with some endings, so clear branding, secure HTTPS and accurate contact information become especially important.
Can I change the extension later?
You can register another domain and move the website, but the address itself cannot be edited. A move requires redirects, email changes and careful SEO migration, so choose deliberately.
